Hi all,

I'm new to linux and chose Debian to "learn" about it. I have successfully installed Debian (current stable) on a second HD on my PC and all looks good except for the video drivers ... and I'm not 100% sure that that is the issue.

After installation - I go to set the screen resolution and my only option is 640x480 @60hz. This is most likely due to my choosing vga during the installation - the ati drivers didn't work with my particular ATI card - the Fire GL 4. So I ran the reconfig and choose vga just to get up and going.

Now I need to learn how to find and install the correct drivers...and will need some help.

I did see some Linux drivers on the ATI site:

They appear to have some for the Fire GL4 but I'm clueless as to how to install them.

PS - once this is resolved (fingers crossed) I have to learn how to set up for dual monitors! Yikes!

Have you searched the ATI site? I was looking but think i need to sign up for account before i could find docs. (which im not willing to do)

There installer is easy to follow and they even have a tool to configure X.

note that most of ATI drivers will list what they require on there webpage www.ati.com

I'm looking at the FireGL™ 4/3/2/1 series.

They appear to come in 2 flavors - tarball or .rpm. Right now I'm struggling with learning how to install them after downloading.

I "think" that I have found that a program called "alien" is necessary to install the rpms - still clueless as to how to un-tar and install the tarball.

I don't actually see any hard instructions on the site as far as installation - I also read somewhere that there is an actual installer for ati drivers ... still looking for that.

I would prefer to use a distribution that would recognize and install (at installation) the proper drivers but I figure at least I'm learning going this route.
