See "How to install ANYTHING in Ubuntu!" at http://amitech.50webs.com/installing/index.php.html

I don't see any point converting an .exe file to a .tar.gz . A .tar file is only a compressed file like a .zip

.exe are executables in a Windows environment. Which means you cannot run an .exe in Linux (Unless you install Wine in Linux to run Windows executables).
But you cannot convert an .exe to a .tar.gz
Tar.gz is usually associated with "source" code. Source code is used in the construction of some .exe files.
