Installation of Bigpond ZTE usb wireless broadband

I have an Acer Aspire One with linux linpus lite os installed. I am trying to install a bigpond ZTE wireless broadband device and am having all sorts of trouble. I have installed gnome-ppp and the modem is now being detected. I changed the initialization string to ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 and when I press connect I am brought straight back to the original screen. I changed the string in the original place because although the modem was being detected, I couldn't go any further than that. I have read many articles, but don't seem to find anything that pertains exactly to me.

I'm not familiar with Linupus but if you use Network Manager to add a Mobile Broadband connection it's usually pretty painless... just select your provider from the list.

Wish that it was that easy. For a start, the OS recognised the usb device as a cd-rom, I have installed usb_switchmode to alleviate that problem, but the device does not show up in Network Manager, after a lot of investigation, I have installed gnome-ppp which enables the os to recognise the device, but I am unable to make a connection, I suspect it has something to do with the initialization string.
