From the looks of it, installation on my RedHat 9 is hell. This is my second re-installation of RedHat. First I thought maybe the dual boot of Windows XP might be affecting so I formatted everything and now the Penguin has taken control.
First off, I can't install or remove any packages. Everytime It asks for the CD-ROM (1, 2 or 3), then I press OK, RedHat just hangs and after a while I get Error during Installation with a Close button.
Second, I can't run .RPM files. My Mozilla installation was with an install-mozilla.sh if I'm not mistaken. Everytime I run any .RPM file, I get the window with "Processing Headers", then "Reading individual packages" and then, it just disappears. I've tried it over and over again. This happened since the first installation and has not changed.
Third, when I try to compile something, I get that I can't since there is no C or whatever. So I try to install "C" stuff from the Add or Remove Packages, but then I can't since the CD problem.
So my RedHat state is like this. Is there any solutions? Please help, I can't go on with an un-installable-software-PC.
well i know i personally cant pinpoint a problem, but i can say, there are a few troubleshooting steps you should/could take first, so startying are the cds good? second is the cdrom good? do you have a spare cdrom to replace it with for testing purposes? as of rpms, did you try "rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/__*", and then try rpm again? and lastly i think the package issue will resolve when you complete step one and figure out the problem with the cdrom or cd's.
The CD-RW drive is working fine - It always has. The CDs had no problems until today, I don't think anything much could happen in 12 hours? I did not drop or scratch it in anyway. It only started to happen after I tried to install "Development Tools" as far as I can remember.
I also tried your command in the terminal, I did not get any results echoed out but I tried the .rpm again (not from the terminal) and It still disappears off.
May I ask what does your command do anyway. I'm not sure about the rest but I know the ___* is for anyfiles with the prefix __? I found __db.001, __db.002 and __db.003 in the /var/lib/rpm.
