install over windows

Hello,

I'm completely new to linux.
I want to install linux on an older computer to test it. I've chosen to install Mandrake 10.0.

Now, on the computer, windows 98 is installed. Do i have to format the computer first?

Sorry for the stupid question, but i'm completely new...

When you run the Mandrake install program it will lead you through partitioning the hard drive. It will offer you the choice of whether to format each partition or not. Choose to format every partition and all existing data on the hard drive will be erased. The one exception is the Master Boot Record. The MBR is changed when Mandrake installs a new bootloader, either lilo or grub.
