Unhappy in firefox images appear to be grainy

Problem : images in firefox appear to be grainy when being displayed along with text. for example the linuxquestions.org icon on the top left corner of this very page is very grainy ( low quality ... jerky ... un-antialiased dunno how else to explain it)

and the same image when opened in a separate tab ( only the image) appears to have changed its quality .. very lean and clear.

Note: this happens only on linux and in every distribution I came across including mandriva, opensuse, slackware, sidux etc.

Specifications:

Dell Studio 1450 laptop with 4 gigs of RAM and 500 gigs of HDD
ATI Mobility Radeon 4530 ... driver installed.

please help me in solving this issue as this is ruining the all the fun of web surfing.

thank you

try about:config in the top box.
set the value for images.dither to false.

Try going to about:config and setting the following values

network.http.pipelining -> TRUE
network.http.pipelining.maxrequest -> 100

This will help optimize firefox for broadband connections. Maybe firefox is scaling down the quality based on it connection settings.
