Having had linux on a 755CX I feel your pain (and am wondering why you would bother, these things are 7-8 years old).
The hacked-up SCSI controller will keep you from being able to access the CDROM, I'm sure that hasn't changed.
The way I used to have to do it was to copy my linux files to the hard drive and install linux from there.
PCMCIA worked on my unit, however it re-flashed my PCMCIA modem once (and nearly cooked it).
