127.0.0.1 is loopback, it should resolve as localhost or some software won't work, Xorg most notably.

Exactly; you've got a funky setup there... not sure if its a Ubuntu special (they do some odd things) or just messed up.
Might be worth checking in the Ubuntu forums.

Sorry It's Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
Restore the files from backups you made before you started editing them. Then learn how to change hostname properly.
