NVIDIA do provide drivers for Linux, as well as instructions for installing them. Just go their website and look for them.

Why would you install nvidia graphics drivers ? You have an ATI graphics card.

Code:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)
02:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (Secondary) (rev 01)

I don't know why you doubt that those are the "real" drivers, but yes they seem to be, if you're using x86_64. There's even a link to installation instructions!

Forget going to vendor's sites and downloading programs there. Almost everything you need is available by your package manager. In Ubuntu, to get propriety drivers, go to System->Administration->And it should be hardware drivers or something, can't remember off the top of my head.

@ Bratmon is right, absolutely the preferred method :

System->Administration-> "Hardware Drivers".

And generally : You do not download software for Linux.
All other software is present in the Package Manager =
Synaptic. A couple of clicks : And it gets installed.
..
EDIT : Sorry, I was writing, while you posted # 9.
..

Open source drivers for your video card were installed and configured for use by default. What makes you think you're supposed to install other drivers?
