I believe I've screwed up?

After a recent upgrade to 8.04 I have 'lost' Synaptic and Add/Remove. When selected the load icon lights, rotates for a few minutes then disappears without loading the program. Of course this means I cannot install/uninstall anything, even updates don't work.
Have read all I can find, but nothing works on this problem.
Can I 'unload' back to 7.1 as that worked fine?

Have you tried starting them from the terminal, or better yet, just using apt from the command line?

IMO never upgrade if you can install from scratch.

The 8.04 release uses a package manager named Adept by default. Look for that in the system menu. You can use that to install Synaptic.

If you cannot find Adept in the menus then open a terminal window and run sudo adept.
Code:
sudo adept
If that doesn't work then at least you should see some informative messages saying why Adept isn't running.

I've bounced back and forth between 7.10 and 8.04 - as clean installs.
This works as I have a separate /home partition. Works a treat.

I can believe you, it seems most of the problems are occurring North of the Equator.
