I'm new to Linux and want Internet access using Linksys router and Belkin adapter

I have been using Windows and never used Linux. I got a great deal on a Compaq computer that had ubuntu already loaded on it. I later found out it was a Linux operating system. I heard good things about it and decided to try it out. Because it is in a room in my basement with no feasible way to connect it to my router, I decided to buy a wireless router, (Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router, Model WRT54G). I used the CD on my main computer with Windows to configure my wireless system. I understand that I must use an adapter to access the wireless network on my computer in the basement. I tried to download the CD for the Linksys as well as a CD for a Belkin Wireless G Adapter but got no where. Apparently Linux is incompatible with both CD's. Being new to Linux, I don't know where to start looking on the system to begin any of the suggestions from my friends about IWCONFIG to attempt to set the computer up. I've been told that I could download WIndows XP as a dual OS but that might entail more than I'm ready to try. How and where do I start (if it's even feasible) to get my computer set up to my wireless router so that I can have access to the Internet?
