hi everyone.....i'm nwe in linux and i've just downloaded linux madrake 10.1 from this site but i thought that the cd's were bootable, but i boot my pc from cd room and founds nothing, so i don't know how to install this linux in my pc.....can anybody please help me????

i've burn it with windows XP....why?

you might need to specify that you want to burn a bootable cd/dvd before burning it.

If you are using Nero or Roxio use the option "iso" burning and then select the disc image you have downloaded.

look at the cd under windoze. if there is just one file on there, you have burned it wrong.

I can't remember how to do it under nero pro or whatever it is, haven't used windoze in about 6 months , but under nero express, go to "burn saved disc image" or something like that, then you might have to click "next" a couple times until it brings up a file selection dialog. from the dropdown box, select ".iso", then select the .iso file you downloaded, then just "next" your way through.

I have this problem too, however, I cannot create a bootable because I don't have a flopp drive and Nero won't let me make one with a DVD or CD. Any suggestions?

I think the issue is being confused with burning iso's as images and a bootable CD (which means copying system files necessary for windows to boot-in which case a floppy or bootable CD may be asked for). I have used last year both Nero and Nero Express to burn iso's as images. The only thing that stands out in my mind was the need to choose the option of going to the "full program" in order to get the option of burning an iso.

ASFAIR, every linux distro CD I used (generally the first if it was a set) was bootable without adding system files. Hope this helps.

ok.... I've downloaded 3 files....one in each CD, the name of each file ends with .iso
if i insert one disc in windows it reads it as a .iso file, also i have mandrake 8.0 installed on my PC, but when I insert these CD's mandrake doesn't recognize them at all, so i'm really confused.
maybe i can boot my pc from a floppy disk and then start the installation of these linux, would it work?? how can i make a bootable floppy in linux???

Those files that you have downloaded are special "images" of what the CDs should look like. Instead of putting all the separate files on the Website, they created an ISO image (which is a single file). You must use a third-party CD burning program (such as Nero Burning ROM, Alcohol 120%, or Easy CD Creator) to convert that image to usable files.

In any of these programs is a place where is says "Burn an image to disk". This will then create the usable, bootable CDs you need.

To reiterate, you do NOT burn the iso file to disk, as a file. You burn the iso to disk as an image. The last time I looked at Nero, it was under the "Tools" menu item "Burn image to CD" (or something similar). Specify the iso file you want to burn, and it is off and running.

Whatever software you are using, you must choose to burn an image or an ISO. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT burn this as a regular data disc. If you are using something like Roxio, the wizard won't help. I beleive you would have to go to file, burn image, and then point to the file. It really depends on your software you are burning with.

Do a search in the helpfile for the software you are using for "burn image" or "burn ISO" and this should walk you through it.

Once you burn the "image" to a disc, boot off of it and voila!

If you look at the content of the disk in windows there should be multiple files NOT one iso file.

Why do I see one large .iso file on my burned cd instead of files and directories?
This happens when you copy the downloaded .iso file to a cd instead of burning it as a disk image. Some software will automatically recognize a .iso file and burn it correctly. Some software requires a specific menu selection such as 'Create CD From Disc Image'
