howto change standard X depth

hi

I'm having some problems getting the nvidia drivers to work.

I checked my xfree log which says that opengl can't work under a depth of 8bit. I commented out those lines of setting 8bit depth in /etc/X11/XF86Config but X still wants to use a 8 bit depth. Now X doesn't want to start up: No display subsection in Screen section "Screen0" for depth/fbbpp 8/8. Screen found but none have usable config.

How can I make X use a default depth of ie 24?

thanks for your replies
