Mandrake might have put you directly to the command line. You should first create a normal user (even if you are the only user of the PC). But before that, try to start the graphical environment by typing the following command the the line you get.
Code:
startx
I've never used mandrake so may be someone else can give you exact steps.
When you installed, were you offered the option of setting up a GUI login--anything on configuring Xwindows. Gnome, KDE, etc.?
Do you know if you in fact installed Gnome or KDE?
If in doubt, just reinstall and look for options to give you a GUI environment.

KDE, GNOME are the most full featured and competing (yet completely free) desktop environments. They also tend to be a little heavier on old or low-power hardware. If you have a newer machine you would not have any problem. Pick anyone for now and start exploring. If you don't like the one you picked try another one. FYI, there are other graphical environments too...like XFCE, Fluxbox, Enlightenment, Blackbox, Openbox, FVWM, IceWM.
