how to produce pop-up message box / alert window from shell script

I just want a command I can call from a shell script to produce an alert window perhaps with a click to close or yes / no / cancel - like Windows' messagebox (sorry) , so I can do things like

Code:
if [ whatever ] then popup-messagebox "whatever has happened!"
This must be easy if you know what to do!

Thanks

In a terminal there is a thing you can install that does a variety of boxes and things. It may be in there already. Is it called 'dialog'.??

There is another thing which usually has a sort of big advert and demo for itself already installed. Soryy can't remember its name.

Thanks for that. Couldn't find xmessage, and coudn't get dialog to look nice, but looking for xmessage I found "gxmessage" (a gtk form of xmessage apparently) & that does exactly what I want - very neat
