How to obtain RHLE 5.x install files? Need subscription or not?

Hi everyone reading this at LQ,

I am just wondering about how to obtain a certain version of RHLE ?

Long story short, I have a new server that just got in and also purshased a RHLE subscription with it. The subscription has not arrived yet, can I get the install CDs without it? I was under the impression that the subscriptions were just to obtain "Support"... not to obtain the install packages itself.

Can anyone give me some light on this?

Regards,

Hi there,

If you have got the subscription then you can download the install package from there site or give them a call as to how you can get the RHEL install CD/DVD.

You said that you have not received the subscription yet but I think they have gave you some reference number of the subscription purchase. You can give that reference number or bill number whatever they gave you at the time of purchase to them and ask them to give you the link to download the install.

Have a look at this link: http://www.redhat.com/partners/subscription_center/

Like he said, if you've ordered the DVD from RH (RHEL not RHLE), then the 'subscription num' will arrive in the pkg along with the DVD(s).
You only need it when you register the system with RHN. From then on it will remember the num.
Code:
# install OS, and it will ask for subscription num.
# You can choose to do this after install;
# if so, then after install, login as root at cmd line and
# run cmd

rhn_register

# and have subscription num ready
The subscription entitles you to (paid) support and updates.
If you are capable of doing your own support, you can get the equiv CENTOS distro, which is a free rebuild of RHEL. You will then be able to get (free) updates from the CENTOS repos, but no (paid) support.
your choice.

Thanks a bunch for the explanations and taking of your time to write back on this post.

When I`d got back to work this morning I called the RHEL representative for our area.
long story shorts it came down to the exact same thing you guys explained/posted. (except for the CentOS part.) ;-)

The rep mentioned I could download the 30 day eval in the meantime that my key gets in.

The sub-key got in this afternoon so I should be all set for monday.

I`ll go over some practice installs in vmware over the week-end to get a feel of this distribution.

Many thanks and have a great week-end.

Andy
