How to make files hidden from windows when using linux.?
Windows files have the options/flags-
Read-only
Hidden
Archive
system
How can I set these file options using a linux OS.
I have a thumb drive containing files that I want to remain hidden when viewed on a windows xp machine. How do I set the windows hidden flag on files I create on linux?
If you want to use the GUI, you can pretty much do the same thing. Just right click on the folder you want to hide, click the permissions tab, and select "None" in the access windows. They will not be available on the network.
BobNutfield, that won't work on a FAT file system, which is what the thumbdrive is probably using, and even if it worked it has nothing to do with the question asked.
If I understand it correctly, he wants to mark some files on the (FAT32) thumbdrive as hidden. When he plugs the thumbdrive into a computer running Windows, he wants those files to be considered hidden.
I'm not familiar with how to do this. Obviously, the way to make a file hidden when the thrumbdrive is plugged into a Linux computer is to begin the file name with ".". However, this is completely unrelated with the way it's done by Windows.
(edit: added Oh, apparently it's done with mattrib. Thanks, bsdunix!

OK, thanks for correcting me. I suppose I didn't understand the question. However, I will tell that when I apply no access to a folder on my home network, that folder is not visible to my Windows machines. That is what I understood the question to be. I apologize for the confused post.
