How to install themes on Linux (GNOME)

I downloaded a few themes in tar.gz format and installed them using tar -zxvf name.tar.gz, but I dont get them in my preferences/themes menu. How to switch to the newly installed theme?

You need to drag the tarball onto the themes window, then it should install them and they should appear.

There was a bug in this for a while, if you aren't using the latest Fedora version it may not work right.

Some themes may need to be compiled first always check the contents of your tarballs before proceeding with the installation. If there is more than one user on your system and you want them to use your themes then, gtk2 themes usually go into /usr/share/themes, icons into /usr/share/icons and metacity themes can go into /usr/share/themes when you have extracted the tarball.

just goto add new theme button and point it at the tar files voila!

this baffled me for a while but its as simple as that but yeah maybe you put them into the themes directory first (CANT REMEMBER)
