how to install src.rpm

I have learned how to compile the src and install them, or install from the rpm package. But I don't know how to install the package.src.rpm.

Is there an extra step to do it, other than the rpm -i?

I do not know about the rpm command. I am new to Linux. If you have the adminstration control in KDE then you can go to software and install new packages from there. I have KDE 3.5.

The .src.rpm is source code that needs to be compiled. When you install the .src.rpm, you get a source tarball in /usr/src/.../.../SOURCES, and an rpm .spec file in /usr/src/.../.../SPECS.

Your task is to compile the binary .rpm that installs in the usual manner.

Go to the SPECS folder, and run the command 'rpmbuild -bb <filename>.spec' to build the binary rpm which will be placed in /usr/src/.../.../RPMS.

/.../.../ represents sublevels of /usr/src. The exact path will vary among rpm based distros.

You can install src.rpm using the same way as installing an rpm.

# rpm -ivh fileanme.src.rpm
