How to install GCC onto Linux DSL from source

Does anyone know how I would install gcc 4.4.1 from source code onto DSL?
I've downloaded the latest gcc-4.4.1.tar.bz2
bunzipped and tarred. But when I try to build it from ./configure it's not recognising the $PATH nor cc, gcc and return error

Can anyone assist.

Much appreciated thx

Hi, welcome to LQ!

You'll need an older version of gcc (or an equally suited compiler) already
installed to be able to compile a new(er) one from source.

Cheers,
Tink
