How to install a printer driver in Ubuntu?

I have downloaded a driver that I think is the right one for my printer. It's called "m2300w-0.51.tar.gz".
I tried to follow the instructions for the pre-built RPM (according to Install - i don't know what RPM is) :
1. Make sure that all prerequisites are installed (Yes)
2. download m2300w-<version>.rpm from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...roup_id=108751 (yes, does it matter to where, which folder, I have downloaded it?)
3. install or upgrade the rpm package (as root)
$ su
Password: ********
$ rpm -U m2300w-<version>.rpm
it can't find the command. What to do?

If you type man rpm at a command prompt you will see that RPM is a package manager along with all its options. You will see that -U is used to upgrade an existing package. I suspect this is the first time you are installing this driver and it is not an upgrade. RPM is likely complaining that it cannot find the package you are trying to upgrade. I would use the -i option instead to install.

Welcome to LQ.
Quote:
rpm -U m2300w-<version>.rpm
That command is not for Ubuntu, but for e.g. Fedora, CentOS.
( Besides that, 'rpm -Uvh' is the default install command for an rpm OS.)

Installing the Minolta m2300w printer driver from source :
1) cd m2300w-0.51/ && ./configure --prefix=/usr/
2) make
3) sudo make install

But why not install the Ubuntu package : sudo apt-get install m2300w

.
