how do i install mod perl with apache2

Hi,
Just to give the background:
I have installed php, apache and mysql via instructions on this page http://www.brtnet.org/linux/lamp.htm which I consequantly think is the most clear and consise tutorial I have seen thus far. Anyway I want to install mod_perl as well as the latter apps with apache, I have spent some considerable time reading docs from the perl site and alike however there are some things im am unclear about , for instance the instructions from http://theory.uwinnipeg.ca/modperl/d...stall.pod.orig which says not to install perl without the pre-requisites and states the following :

"The mod_perl 2.0 prerequisites are:

=over

=item * Apache

Apache 2.0 is required. mod_perl 2.0 B<does not> work with Apache 1.3.

L<Dynamic|/MP_USE_DSO> (DSO) mod_perl build requires Apache 2.0.47 or
higher. L<Static|/MP_USE_STATIC> build requires Apache 2.0.51 or
higher.

=item * Perl

=over

=item prefork MPM"

can someone be so kind as to decipher what this means?

Also something I misunderstand which is key to the install is from this site http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/user...l#Installation and it basically states that to install mod_perl from source I do

tar -xvzf mod_perl-2.x.xx.tar.gz
% cd modperl-2.0
% perl Makefile.PL MP_APXS=$HOME/httpd/prefork/bin/apxs MP_INST_APACHE2=1

The bit I dont understand is MP_APXS=$HOME/httpd/prefork/bin/apxs, I see this term mentioned quite alot but dont understand where they get the prefork directory from, I dont have such I directory, also $HOME is this a normal users home directory? The thing is even as root I have no directory tree as above, I do have a apxs file but that is in /usr/local/apache2/bin

Any help would be greatly appreciated as Im stuck with this until I can find some decent instructions

Thanks
David

Also if I do perl Makefile.PL MP_APXS=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs MP_INST_APACHE2=1 then

I do make && make test then a few of the tests fail

if I then do make install it says half way through waiting for server to heat up............................. and times out after about 120 seconds and then make install continues and the perl module gets installed in /usr/local/apache2/modules.

The next thing I did was tried to run a perl script via apache e.g http://localhost/mod_perl_rules1.pl but the perl script gets printed in the browser rather than executed.

Finally I read some things about putting stuff in /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf I followed instructions on http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/user...l#Installation which stated to do:

Enable mod_perl built as DSO, by adding to httpd.conf:

LoadModule perl_module modules/mod_perl.so

Next, tell Perl where to find mod_perl2 libraries:

PerlModule Apache2

I also looked at the perl docs in the src directory which stated

LoadModule perl_module modules/mod_perl.so
PerlModule Apache2
#PerlModule Apache::compat
# your config comes here

I assume the above is to go in httpd.conf? Its just none of the docs Ive seen mention this also does it matter which part of the conf file they go in? if this is the case

Any help greatly appreciated

Regards
David
