Question How do I dual boot Linux and Windows XP from Windows boot file

Can anyone help me with this small problem??

I am using, or more honestly would like to use Suse Linux 9.1 Personal, which I have installed on a separate hard drive. Therefore, I have two hard drives: one for Windows XP and one for Linux.

My option is to use the boot file from Windows XP in order to dual boot from start up of my PC. This is my question, I can't get to work, and would be grateful if anyone out there has the solution for me.

The Windows boot file looks like this at the moment:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
Linux = bootsect.lnx

The bootsect.lnx has been copied from Suse Linux and placed in the Windows hard drive. The configuration on the hard drives are thus:
C:\ is Windows XP (Primary Master)
D:\ is Suse Linux (Primary Slave)

Can anyone help me please??

No it will not work.

Windows has a monopoly and wants to keep it that way.

You will have to install grub or lilo to allow you to dual boot.

Is this an exact copy of your boot.ini?
Should be:
c:\bootsect.lnx="linux"

You did copy the bootsect.lnx file to c:\?

Make Sure XP is installed first and linux (Lilo actually) will do the rest.

When you boot it should come up with the options...

Linux (Or what ever distro you have)
Windows (Or Similar)
Failsafe
and... something else that i've forgoten coz i never use it

Hope this helps too.

But DON'T edit the windows files.... Windows is the work of satan and will kill your PC/Linux box

Peace
David

He wants to use NTLOADR, so this will not work.
michaelk left him a tutorial that should do the trick.
