How do I backup my nagios server on Ubuntu

I am running Nagios Core on Ubuntu Linux. How can I backup my nagios server and the linux instance before I upgrade the Linux OS to the latest version?
Thank you anyone for your help.

"How" as in which files to back up or "how" as in backup methods? (Note if this would be a virtual server you could also use snapshots so you best be more verbose about everything.)
