How can I share my laptops wifi with a wired desktop by ethernet

I'm guessing this is really easy to do but i tried and it didn't work. I have a desktop running Mint 20 and a laptop running Mint 19, I think. I don't have a wifi card in the desktop so it needs to be plugged in to the router. I don't want to be running ethernet cables all over the house so I was wondering if I can plug the desktop into the laptop with an ethernet cable and use the wifi that way. It's not a permanent solution but I don't want the desktop plugged into internet all the time anyway, just the odd time and I can bring the laptop over to it.

Like I said I did try by plugging the cable in and the desktop did try to connect but it failed unfortunately. I'd say I need to give it permission or something. Anyway thanks in advance!

Honestly, if it was me I'd spend the €16 in Argos on a USB WiFi adaptor for the desktop. (https://www.argos.ie/webapp/wcs/stor...hTerms=3389780)

Plug it in, configure it, forget it. Saves messing around with laptops, cables, power supplies for the lappy, desk space, blah, blah, blah!

Thanks, I might go that way. I did have a TP-Link adapter in the desktop but I couldn't get it to work. It actually caused Mint 20 to crash every time I turned the computer on. How easy are the USB ones to configure?

breadbin,

This TB Ralink 5370 USB Wifi Dongle appears to work according to the feedback from Linux users:

Mint 19 should be capable of Internet connection sharing.

Using the Network Manager applet look at the settings for your wired connection under IPV4 and see if there is a "shared to other computers" selection. There should also be an option setting to enable DHCP.

I agree that a USB wireless adapter would be a better way.

Do a web search for "use linux as a router."
