You can either open up a terminal from the applications menu or you can hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to a shell.

if you do use CTRL+ALT+F1 (also F2-6) and you want to get back to your window manager (gnome, KDE, XFC4) use CTRL+ALT+F7. but it's easier to use a terminal program.
