Help: Unable to Boot into Linux Partition.

I have a 4Gig HD with Win98 on 2G and Vector Linux on the other. Vector Linux is on Partition /hdc5

I changed /etc/fstab with the following line to mount /dev/hdc7
This is another Linux partition on my Hard Drive. Then I had to shutdown my PC. After that my PC is not booting at all. and says that I can either reboot or login as root to do maintenance.

I am currently typing this using Knoppix with CDROM Boot/USE.

From Knoppix, I am not allowed to write to /etc/fstab as it is protected.

Here is the line I added:
/dev/hdc7 /mnt/linux ext2 defaults 0 2

Knoppix will not allow me to write to the Windows Partition.

I don't have enough floppies to save what I have on my Vector partition /hdc5.

What can I do now to get out of this situation ?

Please advice at the earliest.

Thanks.

Vijay

You should very well be able to write to that partition, you may just not be root:
whoami
As long as you are, and it's a linux filesystem, then you should have no problems writing to any of the files on it. If you are, remount it in rw mode, specifying the option:
mount -t ext3 /dev/hdx /mnt/whatever -o users,exec,rw

Cool

I was root and it wouldn't boot. So I decided to reinstall everything. Thanks for the response. This will help my learning process.
