Help on how-login

I need a little help, I've just finished installing mandrake 9.2 onto my pc, configured all i need to configure, and then rebooted. After it boots up and before it's suppose to go in Gnome, it stops at a command prompt wanting me to login to it. I can login as the user created and i can also login as root.
Question is, how the hell do I start Gnome?

As root, type init 5. If it fails, it may mean the graphics card or display info is wrong. You can also check /etc/inittab for the initdefault line and make sure initdefault is 5.

well i hope your not still running as root, since that is what was mentioned above ..
if you are i recommend you make another user, and use that to log in, rather than staying logged in as root all the time ...
only use root when you have to

which definetaly does not mean staying logged in as it at all times .
