help installing gift from source

I am finding it rather difficult to install this giftd from source, i have version 0.11.7 and I have installed the gcc compiler and other stuff, I have extracted the files, running in su mode and choose the directory, and then type ./configure It compiles stuff and it goes all the way to the end and says

giftd will be installed in /usr/local/bin

*** WARNING ***

This distribution does not include a client or a network plugin!
Please see http://www.giftproject.org/ for more information.

*** WARNING ***

After this i try typing make and the bash says the make command not found, the same happens for make install. Am I meant to be in a vi editor?, as I'm just in the bash shell. Just before configure finishes also there is text that talks about what happened, here it is.

giFT 0.11.7

-------------------- core ---

giftd...................: yes
libgift.................: yes
libgiftproto............: yes
use ltdl................:

--------- meta data tools ---

use libvorbis...........: no
use ImageMagick.........: no
use libmagic............: no

-----------------------------

Someone please make me smarter

the warnings are from the configure script. The libraries listed are what your system
is missing. Your package cannot be built if not all dependencies are solved. So, simply,
install the packages and re-configure.

Note, you cannot run make if not configure is successful! the configure scripts sets
environment and customizes your build (which in most cases is necessary!).

If you are interested in learning more about GNU projects (which is good if you are on
a Unix GNU compatible system and plan to build from sources). See the tutorial at:

http://inti.sourceforge.net/tutorial...lsproject.html

Will probably give a little more in-depth information!

Hope this helps! if not, ask again!

That's unlikely to be the problem. If the configure script ran to the end, you have everything needed.

Having said that Gift is a total pain in the arse to install. One client actually has a dedicated setup program for installing it all. "make" in the bash shell should work, don't type "./make" that won't work.
