Help in understand an article

Hello all,

I'm new to Linux and having some problems installing Mandrake 10 on an USB external hard drive. However I think I've found a pair of articles that will solve my problem but I don't know how to do what these articles suggest.

This is the first article that seems to describe everything I want to do:
'Boot Linux from a FireWire device' (sorry for the lack of link. This is my first post so I can't post URL's)
However I get stuck at the start of the Mandrake installation as it does not recognise my hard drive. The article recommends this page,

'Adding USB mass storage devices in Fedora Core'

to help resolve the problem. I don't understand this second article. It seems to assume that I have Linux installed.

I have Knoppix 3.4 (which allows me to mount, partition and format my external drive), Slackware 10.0 and Mandrake 10.0.

Thanks in advance
Benedict

Hi,

If I understand: you can mount your USB drive from Knoppix and you have mandrake10 installed somewhere on your internal drive. Well a thing that you can try (it's not very nice, but it should work): copy your mandrake installation to the USB drive (each directory except /dev and /proc which are specific). Then you just need to reconfigure some settings (like /etc/fstab file).
The problem is that, mandrake10 need to have USB disk drivers to boot from it and you must have a computer which can boot on USB device...
Sorry, If I'm a bit confused but I'm hurry

Oliv'
