you need to add more work spaces
most of the time your woke spaces look like
Code:
_________
| | |
---------
| | |
---------
when you press "ctrl alt arrow key" without compiz do you see the box made of 4 boxes?
you need to
change the work spaces to look like
Code:
_____________
| | | |
-------------
4 work spaces in a line.

Go to Compiz Config Settings Manager. Choose "General Options" then choose "Desktop Size" and make sure "Horizontal Virtual Size" is set to 4. "Vertical Virtual Size" is set to 1. "Number of Desktops" set to 1.

Perhaps there are still some compiz add-ons you need to install in synaptic. Take a look and see. Maybe you don't have "compiz-plugins-extra" installed
