Unhappy handling ftp??

Hi there,
I have the following problem: I want to upload a file from my local machine to a server. The file is on the desktop of my local machine. What I did is the following:

sftp login to the server

and I know the command I need to use is 'put'.
But i donīt understand how i make clear in which directory to put the file? And I donīt understand how to make clear that it is on the desktop of my local machine? Can anyone help solve my confusion?
Thanks in advance.

Try to find the path to file you want to send and then
try this: put /directory_name/filename /directory_name/filename
