Unhappy grub error 17


hi, i am a newbie in linux.
some problem occurred with x server and i tried reinstalling ubuntu.
but now i am facing more problems.
it is saying
"GRUB Loading stage1.5

GRUB loading, please wait . . .
Error 17"
i cant even see the grub menu.
i tried reinstalling it many times but in vain.
what should i do now.i am working on a linux related project and want to fix my pc as soon as possible.please reply as soon as possible.

1. It sounds like you probably want to re-install.

2. Download and make a physical copy of the Ubuntu Live CD. You can experiment - and make sure your hardware is compatible - *without* necessarily installing on your hard drive until you're ready:

This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB.
I would suggest you use your install CD, load it, open a terminal and post the output of command: sudo fdisk -l, this will give partition information. I'm assuming Ubuntu is not your only OS? Also post the contents of the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.
