gparted create gpt drive.

Hi,
I have a 4tb hdd that I would like to create as a gpt drive to store pictures and what not.
I tried to make the drive in windows but it resulted in that I could not see it in linux also gparted reported the drive to be not correct.

Now I was thinking of making it with a live gparted usb stick. since my linux partition is broken and whaits for recovery.

So what I rembered is that I need to put an EFI partition on it, is it nessecary since I will not boot from it?
If it is nessecary how big should it be? I know windows usually puts a ~100MB EFI but I have read that I should put at least 500MB.

I have previously created an EFI on a disk but then I had to use gdisk to set the flag "EF00" on the EFI partition, Can this be done directly form gparted? I found no settings to do this.

Thanks.

No, you do not need an EFI partition on that disk if you already have one to boot from. Juat format it as gpt and allocate partitions for your data.

What tool did you use in windows and did you see any error message when you tried to view files from your Linux?

What exactly do you mean by gparted not reporting the drive was correct?

Creating a GPT drive is a very simple process using GParted and as stated above, no EFI partition is needed on a data only drive.

Do not remember, but I think it was windows native, but I used a paragon tool because my bios did not support the 4TB hdd at the time.

The partition was outside the drive, i.e. the end of the partition was beyond the last sector.

ok thanks for all the help both of you!!

In mswindows the "native" tool to partition drives is "Disk management".
You have to select the hard drive from to partition, make it "Basic disk" as gpt and then create one or more partitions.

In GParted, you have to select the hard drive from the device drop down list in order to visualize the drive's content. After that you have to create a new partition table )specify gpt / GUID partition table, create the partitions you want and apply the operations. If you don't find the hard drive in the device list check the sata cable or change the sata port where it is connected. Sometimes simple hardware issues can cause problems.

You can try to use the latest GParted version. I know there was a bug related to ntfs partitions in some older versions, a few years ago.
