gnome manager problem


i have dell laptop.i am unable to login into system.
i am getting error message as 'gnome manger is not properly installed.contact your system administrator'

then i pressed ctrl+alt+f1.

then i get black background and then i get login into that.but i am unable to get usual background and usual display.
then i entered 'sudo apt-get clean'
but i am getting message as
'unable to resolve host yaswanth'
and i am unable to shutdown.

Unable to resolve host is either no Internet connection or bad link. And if you can If you can log into the terminal, try reinstalling gdm. And where did you get the repo yaswanth?
