Question giving apache the correct permissions

I am running red hat 9 with Apache (the version that came with RH9) on a local machine as a "test station" for our website before going live with it.

I am having problems with a cgi program that should set up protected directories and users via htpasswd (indexsoft access manager)

I suspect a file permissions problem, cos when I telnet and do the following it works:
/usr/bin/htpasswd -
"/home/riponleeds/htstuff/.htpasswd" "fred" "anything"

but when I run the cgi script, it doesnt and the httpd error log file says:

/usr/bin/htpasswd: unable to create temporary file 'htpasswd.tmp.lz6jB0', referer: htt(url removed in order to post)/cgi-bin/accessmanager.cgi?todo=managehtpasswd

I have tried changing the user that apache runs as to no avail.

The cgi program works on the "real" website so I suspect my configuration, not the program.

Hopefully ....

If you are having cgi script problems, usually it is the httpd.conf file.
What are the rights to /var/www/cgi-bin?

Also, it could be in your httpd.conf file. If you post it we can see if it is exactly that.

Additionally, have you tried a php program for user ids who login to your webserver? I use coment webfilemanager found here:

http://cwfm.sourceforge.net/

Its really cool. You have to install PHP though in order for it to work.PHP is a lot faster than cgi imho..

Thanks for the help -

(1) my http conf is appended. (comments removed cos it was too long to post - I'd appreciate any other comments or suggestions about this file - I'm also having problems getting SSI to work, but as I don't plan to use it, I haven't worried too much)

(2)afaik /var/www/cgi-bin has owner root, I need to go home to check this and its permissions (only got web access at work at the moment)

(3) I'll try cwfm, but it sort of leaves me unsatisfied that I can't get this program going ...

Many thanks

That is one looooong httpd file! lol

One thing I noticed ..anybody else step in here...

Your line
<Directory "/var/www/cgi-bin">
AllowOverride None
Options None
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>

Should have a Options +ExecCGI in it ...it should look like this.

<Directory "/var/www/cgi-bin/">
AllowOverride None
Options +ExecCGI
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>

The Options +ExecCGI tells apache to run cgi scripts in this specific directory...

Good luck!
