in order to get graphs from mrtg.. do I have to get any service up ? It generates graphs but they are always blank.

Do you ever have traffic to your server? If you don't have traffic then your graphs should be blank. You might already know this, but you can also point your browsers to http://localhost/usage/ This is a pretty cool tool for analyzing traffic.
