getting a desktop from shell

I finally managed to install FC3 over NFS.

The last problem is getting a desktop. Whenever i boot, i am brought to:
Code:
Fedora Core release 2.91 (FC3 Test 2)
Kernel 2.6.9-1.667 on an ppc

Localhost login: root
Password:
Last login: Fri Apr 8 12:27:14 on tty1
[root@localhost ~]#
I tried switchdesk, still left at a command prompt. How do i get a gui?

thanks

But don't run X as root. Never ever log in as root. If you need root permissions use 'su'. So as junme said, login as a normal user and type 'startx' assuming you have some sort of Desktop Environment or Window Manger running. This depends on what you chose during the install.

im not sure if it is the same with FC3, but in redhat 9 to tell it to boot to gui i just have to edit the id:3:initdefault: (may be a differnet number, there is a list just above the line) line in the /etc/inittab file to: id:5:initdefault: (or what ever number corresponds with X11 in that file)
