Unhappy gedit-4865 gtk warning cannot open display

I am trying to edit the interface file but keep getting this error:
gedit-4865 gtk warning cannot open display. I have updated the apt-get gedit but to no avail. Please help..

If you're running X session (Gnome, Unity or other ) you can try to do so

gedit --display :0.0

If you are trying to edit the interfaces file, you need to use the gksudo and not sudo, for example:
