font and menu bar size is crazy

RH9 and Win98 dual boot.

I have been playing around with desktop appearances and preferences, both as a regular user, and as root. Since I started this, menu bar fonts and fonts in some web pages (not all) have been going crazy, size-wise. For example, when I open OOo 1.1, the menu bar commands (File, etc) are so big that only one word (such as File) appears on the screen. The menu bar is several inches tall and wide. OOo did not do this before.

Same with some of the fonts on this page of LInuxquestions.org where I am composing this message.

All I wanted to do was speed up the screen response times (using the Desktop appearance wizard), and make a red background for the root user, as a warning to myself. Now everything is all screwed up. Using control panel and setting everything under Appearance and Destop back to Defaults did not help.

How do I fix this?

Thanks.
