file system repair

Using open suse 11.4. Rebooting was informed that Root file system is currently mounted read only and to repair manually then reboot
informed to ad- write do bash# mount-n-o remount,rw/
This failed . Questions is there a simple way to repair the problem.

Any suggestions to fix same would be appreciated .

What filesystem type are you using?
You need a live CD (like Systemrescuecd) and then you can repair the filesystem with the tools.

ponty

You are aware that opensuse 11.4 has not been supported for a rather LONG TIME

it went End of life back in " November 5th 2012"

it is missing 3+ YEARS!!! of security fixes

--- DO NOT USE !!! ---

as to fixing the file system
what are you using ?
the default LVM or ext2

keep in mind 11.4 is OLD .It was released "10th of March 2011"

normally you would pop in the install dvd
but with 11.4 being old the first of the 4 install CD's

and boot into the rescue mode
-- as per the on screen instructions

after you are told to type in "chroot /mnt/sysimage" from the OLD install media
read the logs and find out what is wrong

it is also possible that with this operating system being old enough that it has been unsupported for 3 years that the hard drive might be going bad

thanks all for the constructive in put on my problem.
Firstly I had my son look at the issue and he at the time solved the problem and had things going first class. The system worked all day , no problem Then the following morning on setup the problem reincarnated its self. I guess as a young 80year old I fail to understand how from one day to the next and given that between time nothing had been done to the system it goes back to raising the same issue. I might add at the time my son was fixing the problem he did say that after his alterations if the problem was still evident then most likely the hard disk had been corrupted.
The system is as you say old however my purpose in seeking to continue with it was that the computer is simply used for typing letters. I guess if the problem is not fixable then I need to get another computer .

IF you gave any further suggestions please let me know how ever I warn you its up to me to implement same as my son is now out of the country

Thank you

Sounds like your hard drive is expiring.

I believe that is the wrong command, unless it is a typo.

mount -o remount,rw /

I would recommend running a fsck on the hard drive as it could also be hard drive issue

Boot some Linux live CD or USB. Run test:
Code:
smartctl -t long /dev/sda
After test is finished grep results:
Code:
smartctl --all /dev/sda | grep -e "Reallocated_Sector_Ct" -e "Current_Pending_Sector" -e "Offline_Uncorrectable" -e "UDMA_CRC_Error_Count" -e "Hardware_ECC_Recovered"
If your reallocated sector count is maxed out the drive is practically dead.

If the hard disk is about to die, you need a good backup of all user data, and you need it as soon as possible.

At that point, you might need a new hard disk, rather than a whole new computer, followed by an install of some up-to-date software. If the computer is rather old, it still might be preferable to get a cheap secondhand computer, rather than a new hard disk, but I'll leave discussion of that until there is more info.

Thanks all for your input . At the moment my system now states " Root file system is already mounted ---- read write

"An additional comment states" Fsck failed for at least one file system (not / )

Suggested that I repair manually then reboot

Question what does this all mean and is there anything I can do to address this further suggestion .

I recognise this may be the end of the line for my system but it is becoming interesting to learn about what is involved in addressing what you all go through to achieve your independence from the recognised facilitators . Thanks
