fedora core 3 kernel 2.6.11-14_FC3

I am new to linux and wanted to get into it. First I installed the 64 bit edition of fedora but that would freeze on me during startup. Next I installed fedora core 3 32 bit and it worked well. However, once i updated the kernal to version 2.6.11-1.14_FC3 the system locks up during the boot sequence at:
Initializing hardware... storage network audio done [OK]
_(blinking cursor)

I am able to reboot and run the 2.6.9-1.667 kerel without issues though. One other problem is that once I updated to the new kernel my boot manager (GNU GRUB 0.95) now has Fedora Core 2.6.11.1.14_FC3 as the default operating system. I origionally had win xp pro as the default, how do I change it back. My hardware is listed in my signature, and I have a dual boot setup installed on my hardrive with 20% dedicated to Fedora. I would like to get the new kernel running if possible, if not how do i uninstall it.

Thanks in advance for any help,
John

Could you hit ctrl-alt-del or required a hard reset?

How long did you what before rebooting? Wait at least 20 minutes to see what happens. If it does finishing booting in less than the above time I recommend looking for more current releases of initscripts and hal daemon.

Look here for newer rpm's. These are not fully tested but may work for you. I recommend you have backup of current rpm's of the rpms you try to upgrade to incase something goes wrong.
ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub...6/Fedora/RPMS/

If not wishing to try the above then look over this part.
Are you upgraded the system? If so how? what repos?
Try dag repos whether using yum or synaptic.

I am not sure how long I waited at least 15 but maybe not 20. I could not do a soft reboot, I had to hit the reset button.

Yeah, I had similar problem updating from 32bit 2.6 to 2.11 (also had similar problem with the 64 ver of FC3). It was a driver problem for my 6600 PCIe card, when I originally installed 2.6 I used nvidia 7167 in rescue mode. But when I upgraded to 2.11 I had to install nvidia 7174 under rescue mode to enable bootup past the 'detecting hardware' screen.

You could always disable rhgb from the bootup instructions to rule this out.
