Fedora 6 - Blinks & logs out

I have installed Fedora 6 on my XP desktop and set up for dual boot, I had initially installed with test install and later changed the inittab to GUI.

It gets to the login screen, upon entering username & password it tries to open the GUI windows, but blinks twice and returns back to the login screen.

I am newbie and don't know how to diagnose and resolve, any help is of great help.

Regards
Kallimath

Sounds like the X server is unable to load. Look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, the answer is very likely there.

In case you do not know how to access this file here's how:

Use CTRL+ALT+F2 to switch to a console
log in
type less /var/log/Xorg.0.log
use PageUp and PageDown to scroll

If you find errors you do not understand post them here.

Unable to get to the console

Thanks for the response,

I tried to follow your instructions, When I press the CTRL+ALT+F2, screen flashes and freezes, can not proceed with anything, had to hard reboot.

This is rather unusual. What graphics card you have there. Boot up in maintenance mode (or whatever the non-GUI mode is called in FC).
Now you can have a look at xorg log.
You can probably get the GUI mode running by editing your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Replace your existing driver with vesa. This is not a solution though, generic vesa does not allow higher resolutions.
Code:
Section "Device"
      ...
      Driver "vesa"
      ...
EndSection
