Extract XP CD Key in Linux

A friend of mine who works at a computer repair shop asked me if there was any way to extract his Windows XP CD key without having to run a repair install and the like. I searched Google for awhile and didn't see anything, but then I got an idea: Is it possible to view the Windows registry from Linux, and if so, couldn't I therefore get the CD-Key?
The perfect scenario would be a nice bootable floppy/cd that just booted a small linux distro then displayed the CD-Key. If there is a registry viewer for Linux, I'd be half-way. I'd just have to figure out how to decrypt the key (which is located in the registry).

Thanks!
