The manpages are a fundamental part of the Linux documentation system. Every command and every configurationfile comes with its own manpage which you open with the man command (what you obviously did). You may execute "man man" to learn more about this.
Back to your scanner issue:
In order to add the user mike to the groups lp and scanner please execute the command
exe files don't work with Linux, they are only for windows....
What looks odd to me is that the sane-find-scanner command works but the group scanner does not exist.
I'm trying to find a solution (or an explanation).
In order to configure your Epson for printing you'll have to do it with cups.

mh, normaly configuring a scanner is quite easy with Linux. Maybe you'll post in the mintforum http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-mint-84/ in order to find out which packages there have to be installed in your distribution in order to get a scanner working.
I've checked out the Ubuntuforums and found that the group "scanner" should be there. As far as I know Mint is Ubuntu-based.
Anyway, Linux can be very frustrating for a newbie in the first days.
