Editing Gnome Menu Layout

Gnome Menu layout in Fedora 6 is a great utility, yet it is very slow and inefficient when making broad menu customizations. How do you edit the menu layout through a text editor? Where is the the configuration file for the menu? Does any guide exist for this goal?

It would be helpful to select multiple items and drop them into a new menu. Copying and delete group of menu would be good as well. I need to cleanup my menus across several computer and would rather avoid using something like alacarte menu editor.
