edit gnome launcher?

I've been trying to edit one of the apps under the Applications menu on the top launcher bar of Gnome under RH9. (edit as in change its name, icon, path, etc) but every time I try to edit it, I get the following error

Cannot save changes to launcher

Details: Error writing file 'applications:/Internet/firebird.desktop':
Read-only file system

do I need to use chmod to change something? if so, can someone give me the syntax? it really annoys me not to be able to edit my own launcher menu.
Thanks

most likely you need to change the owner of that file. (*.desktop are just files)

for this, user_name = your user login name and you'll have to find out where gnome sticks items from the launcher in your directory (ie. /home/user_name/.gnome/blah_blah).

anyway you can try this from the shell terminal (CLI).

1. su
<enter root password>
2. chown user_name:user_name /directory_path_to_file/file_name

after this, you should be able to go to town.

The problem though is that this applies to all of my launcher files, I need a way to be able to access and edit all of my menus.
