EDGE wireless modem cannot resolve IP name

Hi,
I am using EDGE wireless modem VE900 on my development board with linux2.4 on it.
I am using "pppd" and "chat" to establish GPRS connection. The GPRS connection is successful , "ppp0" is up , i got the IP address DNS etc.

But I cannot ping to any web site straight away like
"ping www.google.com".Error returned is "Host lookup failure".

I need to give the IP address like 192.17.x.x , then only it replys.

I understand that there is some issue with DNS.But I have provided the DNS address in "/etc/resolve.conf"

Please help

Hi
/etc/resolv.config contain one line
:

nameserver 172.16.5.3

where 172.16.5.3 is a DNS server . I have written this in "/etc/resolv.config" .
Please note this is the options I give
:

/pppd /dev/usb/acm/0 115200 modem connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/chat/edge" defaultroute nodetach ipcp-accept-remote novj mru 1500 mtu 1500 noipdefault usepeerdns

Also note it works on Linux machine properly. I dont understand form where it can resolve the IP on machine.May be because my "eth0" is also up.
