eciadsl/rp-pppoe/ethernet

I connect using a globespan virata USB modem (bt voyager) I download the drivers some time ago and evrything works fine.

But after a recent visit to the web site there is a new stable version of the driver that they recommend i download (which i have done, but not installed yet) because when looking at the readme files they say :.........
..........................CUT....................................................................... .....................
PPPoE user's: (which is me i think)
You have to configure and use a standard PPPoE client as rp-pppoe
(http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe) to connect to your adsl modem
through tap0.
...........................CUT...................................................................... ........................

So i downloaded this too, and *that* readme file says :.......

..........................CUT....................................................................... ........................

First, make sure the Ethernet card you intend to use with the modem is
visible to the Linux kernel. Just how to do this is beyond the scope
of this document. However, if the card is the only Ethernet card in
the system, executing:

ifconfig eth0

should display something like this:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:67:62:314
.............................CUT.................................................................... ................

This is where i'm totally confused......ethernet card ??????

I didnt configure this the first time do i need to do this time ?

Also my modem just plugs into the back of my pc via the USB port theres no other cables to connect it to the ethernet port ???

Am i missing something here ?

CAn some give a clear explanation ?

tia

I know the feeling. I spent last week setting this up. The doc's refer to eth0. If you do ifconfig -a at the console screen and print it up here we can see what your usb modem interface is known to by the O/S. Replace this with the eth0 when configuring. Also in the ADSL setup file there is a line to replace eth0 with the name that Linux will know the modem by.

so did this mean that we should have an ethernet card? I hope so cause I bought one just to get the thing working!

and if you guys have had the voyager working can I ask which distro's you're using? I'm on mandrake 9.1, and can't get the modem or my on-board soundcard to work... will keep pluggin on though
