Unhappy E:348 no string under cursor error


i am using ubuntu 12.04 when i open the vi editor i am getting this error and my arrows keys are showing some alphabets when i press up and down
somebody please help me

Please try like:

vim filename
Press 'ESC' to go to menu. After pessing 'ESC' you may press 'i' to go to insert text mode. After that again press 'ESC' to go to menu.

It's better if you take tutorial using:
